Our Q&A About Rev Foods Mashups

MACT: Are these tops BPA free? Do you have lab results for this?

Rev Foods: The entire packaging, tops included are BPA-free. And yes, we test for this. Our unique pouch packaging is constructed of a multi-layer film that is made from BPA-free, phthalate-free, & PVC- free materials, proven to be safe for food processing and FDA approved. We have included a foil layer to help preserve the nutritional profile as well as the fresh flavor and vibrant color of our food. This layer does not come in contact with the food and no trace aluminum can migrate between the layers.

MACT: Do these pouches come with an expiration date? How do they keep a shelf live without preservatives in them?

Rev Foods: Yes, the pouches have a one- year shelf life. As noted above, the unique multi-layer film and cap keep the ingredients safe from air, light and temperature that in other formats can affect the overall freshness of the product. Additionally, we use naturally acidic ingredients in our recipes (like apples, lemon juice and pears) to create a natural preservative and yield a brighter, fresh taste. This pouch, which we are now the leading producer of in the United States, has truly revolutionized the kids snack and baby food category.

MACT: What is upcycle?

Rev Foods: Currently, the pouch is not recognized as “recyclable” because of the multi-layer of foil. However, our pouch has created an unbelievable shift in the packaging industry because it is
considered an eco-alternative due to its light weight and size, all of which contributes to less breakage, food waste and lighter freight. For example, for every truckload of our pouches, it would take at least 9 truckloads to carry the equivalent quantity in a glass jar format. Our child- safe cap is a #2 plastic so that is indeed highly recyclable.

Recently, we entered into an amazing partnership with the TerraCycle, Inc.® to recover and reuse our Revolution Foods pouches, wrappers and boxes through TerraCycle’s collection programs, called Brigades. The Revolution Foods Brigade will collect any empty Revolution Foods packaging including Mashups pouches, Jammy Sammy and Grammy Sammy wrappers, as well as outer boxes. For each wrapper collected, TerraCycle and Revolution Foods will pay two cents to a charity of the collector’s choice. The used packaging will then be upcycled into kid- related items such as backpacks, lunch packs, and totes.

TerraCycle’s Brigades divert packaging waste from landfills and help raise consumer awareness about reducing, reusing, and recycling. By encouraging people to rethink ‘what is waste’, TerraCycle makes it simple for sonsumers to have a positive impact on the environment. Participating is free and all shipping costs are covered.
