Happy Munchies Organic Veggie Snacks Wins MACT Excellence Award

| April 5, 2011

What we parents ultimately desire for when we purchase packaged baby food is a chemical-free, hormone free, hormone disruptor-free, wholesome, nutritious snack to conveniently offer our babies. All that, and of course we want our babies to eat the food too. HappyBaby™ Happy Munchies have proven to fill all of those requirements and then some, making these organic snacks the newest winner of the MACT Excellence Award!

One of our mama tester’s comments make us chuckle because of the truth she speaks,

“My three-year old is vegetarian, and a picky eater. The Smart Puffs say they are for one year olds, but my three-year old girl loves them: they’re just like Cheetos, only devoid of the horrible additives and preservatives found in conventional brands.

But, what’s really exciting is that not only are they devoid of unnatural substances, they are full of good stuff, including the mineral choline, which helps brain development. They are made with broccoli, kale and carrots, among many vitamins and minerals, making them a very smart choice for my little girl who would not eat whole broccoli for a new pony.”

Each child is unique.  Each child has their own personality and their own way of doing things.  Including eating!  Sandra’s children (MACT co-founder mama) are a great example of this.  Her first child eats whole foods like no other child I have seen.  At a very young age I recall her eating a plate of salad and other greens!  This is something my 4 year old still won’t take one bite of, and I consider myself an incredibly healthy eater and keep only healthy foods in the house.  Sandra’s second child however won’t eat vegetables, won’t even try them.  Sandra comments that her son prefers to eat things that come out of a package.  Do any of you parents out there relate?

Why Happy Munchies Wins MACT Excellence Award

All of the mama testers on our panel appreciate healthy snacks.  One mama commented to us, “These veggie/cheese snacks have 60% less sodium than the leading toddler cheese snack (Gerber Lil’ Crunchies) and are made with organic whole grain corn. These snacks contain no sugar & 25mg of choline per serving which is good for brain development & taste great.”

Reviews From Real Moms On Happy Munchies

Amanda, mother of a 3 year old:

“I am so happy to be introduced to HappyBaby, a company specializing in premium, organic foods for toddlers and babies!  I like that they are organic and made in the USA. It’s also great that, for every package bought, HappyBaby works with Project Peanut Butter, a nonprofit who helps feed starving children in Malawi. So, not only is my little girl eating much healthier, so is a child who desperately needs it.

Smart Puffs make it easy to pack my beach bag, too. Just throw in a package along with some fresh fruit and some nuts, and you’re set. Simple. I will definitely continue to buy foods from HappyBaby, and I certainly recommend them.”

Andrea, mother of a 18 month old:

“Happy Munchies by happy baby is always the hit of  the party.  Like vultures, the kids can eat a whole container in a matter of minutes so beware. If you have a small one, it is survival of the fittest, you might have to intervene on her behalf.

The containers, BPA free can resemble a drum and provide entertainment with taking on and off the lid.  We love that this product is a wholesome snack for my child fortified with vitamins and minerals.  Every little bit helps and it is an affordable snack @ $2.99 if you monitor the serving size.”

Manaka, mama of a 2 year old

“It is very important for me to give my toddler a good tasty snack that is healthy. They melt in your mouth fairly quick and a perfect finger food for the little ones.

They come is green packaging that is made from 62% post recycled content which makes me feel better about buying a product in a package due to all the waste people create these days.”

Q&A With HAPPY MUNCHIES

MACT:  1.  You have great green foods in some of your Happy Munchie Puff snacks! Does the nutrition from kale and broccoli last once it is altered from the whole food to a dried powder or is the nutritional value coming from added vitamins? Please expand on this for us as parents.

The nutrition from Spinach, Kale, and Broccoli does change when it is dried, but not all of the value is coming from added vitamins.  Mostly, the really sensitive oils and fragrances (yes, these have fragrances…) change or leave, but the basic antioxidant mineral quality are largely unaffected.

MACT:  2.  Why did you choose this type of packaging for your Happy Munchies?  It seems that a pouch (like a bag of chips) would be a more eco-friendly way to package.

Like any new product offering we make, there are a variety of choices, and reasons for making them.  Each, of course, comes with +’s and –‘s.  There are several non-product reasons for choosing packaging, including filling systems, packing systems, warehousing and storage systems, and maybe most importantly, what’s our competition doing, and what does the consumer already “know or expect” for each product type?  This can also be said for the stores that will place our product…there are rules about where a specific type of product is supposed to be placed, and what type of packaging it should come in.

Long story short…food product design, and the packaging it is presented in, involves the ENTIRE supply chain, from source to shelf.  Everybody gets a say, so to speak, in how a product is presented for sale, and sometimes, even if we want to “blaze new ground” with packaging shifts, we have to be competitively aware, and a good partner to all those I mentioned, above, in the supply chain.

3.  What is the inside of your canister made of?

The canisters for both Bellies and Munchies are made from the same packaging scheme.  The outside is a high density fiber system, suitable for the print.  The inner layer is the foil layer (for oxygen barrier), and is coated on the inside with a food-grade polypropylene film.  This is what the food contacts.

4.  What is tocopherols and why is it a safe alternative preservative?

Well, tocopherols are a group of plant sterols which have a LOT of antioxidant activity.   Mostly, they’re free electron  scavengers (antioxidants) and not preservatives.   One tocopherol is a vitamin (Vit E), but they all act as antioxidants by scavenging free electrons preferentially, so other, sensitive components of the food (flavors, light oils, fragrances, and the fat fraction) don’t oxidize.

5.  Is there any msg, aspertame or neotame added to any of your food products?

No.
